Your supervisor ∼ mentor
Teresa has gained experience in this area through her years of university teaching and clinical supervision. She originally came from a professional training and development background prior to her joining the acupuncture profession. Teresa completed further supervision and mentoring training back in 2014 with the British Acupuncture Councils (BAcC) programme for experienced traditional acupuncture practitioners.
As a keen advocate of insightful practice, Teresa has regular supervision herself. Mentoring and supervision has been a natural progression in terms of her own professional development. She synthesises her maturity and experience as a practitioner into this supportive role. The qualities she brings include an innate ability to relate well to others as well as a genuine interest in understanding people and what inspires them.
Reasons for supervision and mentoring
In most caring professions and indeed many other professions, Supervision has now become firmly established as a most valuable tool to facilitate professional development.
Supervision allows practitioners to explore and resolve many issues that could otherwise be impacting on their ability to create an enriching and wholesome working life. Supervision gives practitioners individualised support and guidance. It also plays an important role in combating the isolation that can be felt in private practice.
Engaging with mentoring/supervison is one of the steps any practitioner can take to access the appropriate support that they need to meet their challenging roles.
How supervision and mentoring enriches your development
Supervision and mentoring gives practitioners the support and the perspective that they routinely extend towards others, which they themselves need if they are to sustain a healthy & wholesome practice.
Issues such as maintaining good boundaries, avoiding burnout, dealing with patient transference, compassion fatigue, how to communicate more effectively amongst many other topic are examined in a empathetic and none judgemental environment.
There are times in which practitioners may need more support and encouragement than others such as when newly qualified, when challenges and difficulties are being experienced in their personal lives, on moving practice or when faced overwhelmingly with trying to be all things to all people. Such a process can prove invaluable or even crucial at this juncture.
Teresa works with practitioners to gain a broader and deeper experience of themselves and to refresh and re-inspire them in their working lives.
